PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The first project designed by Bruce McCarty and Associates for the University of Tennessee was the pedestrian bridge crossing over Cumberland Avenue at Strong Hall. Originally called a crosswalk, UT announced in October 1965 that the pedestrian bridge would be completed by the end of the year.
Constructed by Rentenbach Construction Company, the bridge is 150 FT long by 12 FT wide. The width across from each handrail is 9 FT and there is 90 FT of clear span — an open area without usual structural supports. The concrete bridge was made of prestressed, precast concrete by Southern Cast Stone and the arch consisted of two sections.
The concrete structure was restored by the university in 2017.
